Airport Security Hassles
If your name is David Nelson, you may find it difficult to board an airplane these days. The security computers can and do make life difficult for innocent folks. Some believe that the airline screening software has a computer glitch that is pulling up lots of David Nelsons, along with other names vaguely similar to names, aliases, or similar spellings on the government terrorist suspect list.
According to an AP story, airline computers have flagged "David Nelson" as a possible terrorist and that name has been put on a reported circulating no-fly list. David Nelsons and other red flagged travelers may be searched several times, prohibited from flying, questioned by FBI, and even pulled off an airplane.
You could be red flagged if you do something out of the ordinary, like buying a one-way ticket, or paying with cash. This happened to our kids when they moved to Hawaii. They had purchased one-way tickets, and as a result were put through extra searches, pulled out of line and questioned, and even queried some more once they were on the airplane.
If you find yourself on a no-fly list and want off the list, call the Transportation Security Administration Ombudsman at 571-227-2383, TSA Consumer Hotline toll-free at 1-866-289-9673, or send an email to ombudsman@dhs.gov. They will send you paperwork to receive a Passenger Identity Verification Form. It will supposedly make check-in and boarding easier. The form will ask you to provide your address, Social Security Number, and your birth date along with three forms of identification.
