"How do we think of fasting? "

2nd Week of Lent

Discuss the significance of fasting. How do we think of fasting? Is it simply a giving up of some favorite treat traditionally done once a year during Lent, or is fasting a time to take a fresh look at what we think we need to consume? Is it a quick tool to lose ten pounds, or a means to some positive spiritual growth?

There are many ways to bring ourselves to a greater awareness of what our own needs and the needs of others are by limiting our daily intake, not only food but of all natural resources. We can, for example, limit our use of water, electricity, paper products, etc.

Set aside 5 minutes each day for quiet meditation on Scriptures - a peaceful time to listen to what God is saying to us.

Start a love chain. Each time a member of the family overcomes a selfishness, or does a good deed, he/she can add a paper link to the love chain which will hopefully be long enough to decorate a room for Easter.

Design a fish on paper with the Greek letters ICTHUS, Jesus Christ Son of God Savior, which can be used as a center piece at meals this week, signifying the sign of faith of the early Christians.

The pretzel has been used during Lent for over 1500 years. It is believed that originally pretzels were made by monks to resemble arms crossed in prayer. Since basically only flour and water are used, pretzels can also remind us of fasting.

Pretzel Prayer

Heavenly Father, we ask you to bless these little breads. Each time we eat them may we be reminded of the special season we are in and that through prayer we will become better people to each other. Let us not forget those who are in need of our prayers daily. Keep your loving arms around us, O Father, to protect us always. Amen.
