Journey to Freedom

As we approach the half way point in our effort to live these forty days with Jesus, it is good to prepare for Penance as a family or as a couple. Each person can mention something in themselves they would like to correct or improve. Ask God’s forgiveness and the forgiveness of one another.

3rd Week of Lent

Practice being aware of each other’s goodness by telling the one beside you at dinner, some special good quality which was apparent that day.

Write a letter thanking someone who has made your life fuller such as a teacher, your grandparents, a neighbor, etc.

Read the story of the Giving Tree. Talk about what it means to give of self.

Spend a few minutes either praying the Rosary, or explaining it to the children. Then say a decade of the Rosary together.

The fasting for this week might be a whole day without a harsh word to anyone. Before you begin, explain how compliments make others feel good and how harsh words make them feel bad.

Have an evening prayer service. Start with a brief meditation. Light a candle placed where it can be easily seen. Turn out the lights so the flame is the center of focus. Allow everyone to become quiet within. The length of the meditation should be geared to the age level of the children.

Some Scripture Suggestions

When the reading has been completed, allow a silence of a minute or two and share with one another your experience of listening to it. Close with spontaneous prayer.
