Prescription Drug Assistance Programs
One of the biggest challenges that seniors face is the cost of prescription drugs. Here are some ways you can lower what you pay for prescription drugs.
Ask your doctor for free samples.
Check to see if there is a generic version of the drugs your doctor has prescribed.
See if your physician has any information about patient assistance programs in your local clinics and hospitals.
If you are a veteran, you may be able to get some prescription drug help through the VA Health Care Program.
Check out HelpingPatients.org. This is an interactive Web site to help you find patient assistance programs for which you may qualify.
Many states have patient assistance programs that could help with your prescription drug costs. See if you qualify. Some states also have state sponsored online sites from which to order drugs such as, DrugSavings and Minnesota RxConnect Online.
Check into ordering your drugs through an online pharmacy in Canada. Make sure you compare prices and know the total cost of the drugs, including shipping and any additional handling fees. The FDA only limits individuals to a three-month supply of prescription drugs used for personal use that are bought outside the United States.
Eli Lilly Co. offers an Answers Card which gives discounts of 30-40%. Income limits are $18,000 for individuals, and $24,000 for couples.
GlaxoSmithKline has an Orange Card, with 30-40% discounts. Income limits are $30,000 for individuals, and $40,000 for couples.
Novartis has the Care Plan with offers both a flat fee per prescription, or 25-40% off, depending on income. $18,000-$28,000 for individuals, and $24,000-$38,000 per couple are the income limits.
Pfizer has the Living Share Card which offers medications at acost of $15 for a 30-day supply. Check their site for income limits.
An umbrella organization of several drug companies, Together RX offers 20-40% discounts based on income limits.
