Book Review: "Conquering the Rapids of Life"

Conquering the Rapids of Life: Making the Most of Midlife Opportunities
by Ruth Westheimer and Pierre A. Lehu
Hardbound, 246pp. ISBN: 158979012x
Taylor Trade Publishing, 2003

Although Dr. Ruth is best known for her advice as a sex therapist, in this book she goes beyond sexual problems to address the physical and emotional changes that individuals must face as they approach their midlife years.

Topics Covered:

  • The differences and similarites in the midlife experience that men and women have.
  • Getting beyond negative self-judgment and other impediments you may create that block your future.
  • Learning how to approach your senior years with positive thoughts and not negative ones.
  • Adapting to the changes you will face in both your relationships, physical health, sexual performance, identity, moods, and personal independence.
  • Accepting the need to continue to be educated, to stay informed, and to plan ahead for your aging years.
Quote from Rabbi Yehuda ben Tema:
At forty, one reaches the age of understanding; at fifty, the age of offering counsel; sixty is the beginning of older age; at seventy, one earns respect for having the bearing of wisdom; at eighty, one is recognized for having strength and determination. (Ethics of the Fathers, Chapter 5, Mishnah 23).

Chapters:

  • The Whitewater Years Defined
  • Monopause
  • Other Female Health Problems
  • When Man's Best Friend Lets Him Down
  • Other Male Health Problems
  • Empty-Nest Syndrome
  • Psychological Boulders
  • Rekindling Your Romance
  • When the Relationship Turns Sour
  • Other Pitfalls
  • Better Health
  • Grandparents 'R Us
Bottom Line:
  • Ruth Westheimer and Pierre Lehu have an easy to read and understand writing style. The book has an extensive index.

    Two negatives:
It seems a bit too slanted on blaming sexual problems for many other issues in a couple's life.
She seems to put the responsibility for making things better in a relationship on the woman's shoulders.
